Grace School of Theology and Accreditation

Grace School of Theology is an applicant for candidacy with the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) (PO Box 328, Forest, VA 24551; Telephone: 434-529-9539; Website: www.tracs.org)

TRACS is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE, http://www.ope.edu.gov/accreditation), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA, www.chea.org), and the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE).

    General Information

Grace School of Theology is diligently working towards accreditation through the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) and the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) and intends thereafter to seek accreditation through the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). All of these accrediting agencies are approved by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Accreditation has many benefits for both educational institutions and students, but it is neither a guaranty nor is it the sole criterion of an excellent education. Every accredited institution was once unaccredited. For example, Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) was founded in 1924 but was not accredited by SACS until 1969, long after the graduation of notables such as Dwight Pentecost, Charles Ryrie, and Chuck Swindoll. DTS was not accredited by ATS until 1994, but its excellent education before then is unassailable.

    Current Timeline/Estimate:

Currently, our goal and expectation is to be accredited according to the following schedule:

    1. Fall 2013 TRACS or ABHE accreditation granted
    2. Fall 2017 ATS accreditation granted
    3. Fall 2020 SACS Regional accreditation granted
However, we cannot guaranty these dates. It is very possible that the seminary may be accredited either sooner or later than the target dates listed. We offer these dates as our current best guess, as each accrediting agency has the sole discretion in granting accreditation according to its own standards which are always subject to change. We will keep these estimates up to date as we progress in our accreditation application processes.

    Potential Factors Concerning Students

    1. Subsequent Degrees: If you graduate and apply for an advanced degree program (e.g., D.Min. or Ph.D.) in another institution before your graduate institution is accredited, then you may be less competitive or unable to enter the advanced degree program. However, this will vary widely depending on the institution with the advanced degree program. Further, if your graduate institution is accredited after you graduate but before you apply for an advanced degree program, generally you will be recognized as having a degree from an accredited institution. Finally, if your graduate institution is accredited after you matriculate but before you graduate, then you will certainly be recognized as having a degree from an accredited institution. Obviously, if you have no interest or plan to immediately apply for an advanced degree program from another institution after earning your initial seminary degree, then this factor does not apply to you.
    2. Transferability of Credits: Typically, it is easier to transfer credits from an accredited institution than from an unaccredited institution, especially if you are transferring into an accredited institution.
    3. Scholarships: Some scholarships and tuition reimbursement programs may only cover classes from an accredited institution. If this is an issue for you, you should request a scholarship from the unaccredited institution to match whatever scholarship you might otherwise have for education from an accredited institution.
    4. Potential Employers: Some institutional employers may require a seminary degree from an accredited institution.
