Ana Asatiani, Missionary to Republic of Georgia
I'm Georgian. Both my parents were born in Georgia, a former Soviet republic. I was brought up in a very nominal, Orthodox family. I was never taught the Bible. We would go to church on special occasions, but visiting church was no more meaningful to us than visiting a museum. I became a Christian when I was 18, thanks to the preaching of my uncle.
I received a degree in Eastern Languages from the Institute of Oriental Studies, and in 2003 I went to Turkey to master their language. I ended up working for the Turkish embassy as a translator. Even though I was able to translate for preachers and work with youth groups and other ministries on my own time, I felt that I wasn't doing enough for God. I could hear God's distinct call to work in full-time ministry.
God has blessed me with a lot of gifts. I speak four languages: Russian, Georgian, Turkish, and English. I have a heart to return to Georgia, because so many people don't know Christ. Their only knowledge of God comes from priests who keep bandages over the people's spiritual eyes and blind them to the truths that God has revealed to us in His Word. Everything to them is based on works.
That is why I am now a student at Grace School of Theology. So many people have so many problems, and they don't bring them to Christ. I deeply desire to be able to communicate all the knowledge God is giving me to my country and thus help many people.
GSOT classes give me a proper understanding of the Bible and help me know God's Word. Ever since I became a Christian I have had a hunger to know His Word. I found myself asking more and more questions as I got deeper in my faith. In my past, there was no room for questioning or reading the Bible directly. You had to go by what the priest said. After I became a Christian, my cousin became worried about me and took me to see her priest. The priest said that I had no business reading the Bible for myself, because it had all been interpreted already by the church fathers. My belief was that God gave us intelligent minds and sent His Spirit so that we can understand His Word. That is why I am so thankful for the training I am receiving at GSOT. I'm sure that my GSOT education will make me more fruitful and helpful in ministry.
Dr. J.B. Hixson's course, Contemporary Issues Regarding the Gospel, challenged me to think of worldviews that I had never considered before. Dr. Hixson taught us that faith and only faith in Christ is important for eternal salvation. I was brought up in an environment that taught me that performing good works is how we get to heaven. Not many people in my country understand this message of free grace. I need to take this message and communicate this to them.
Finally, I want to express my deep gratefulness to the Lord Jesus, who blessed me with this wonderful opportunity. Just before arriving to the States, one of my dearest sisters in Christ told me: "Ana, do you know that Jesus has just planted you into His 'green house,' to grow and be fruitful for Him?" I believe that she is right. My host family, Faith Bible Church, and Grace School of Theology are God's blessings for me in this "green house."
